“Varroa Tester” (CO2)

# 150321

In stock

Device for determining the degree of infection with Varroa mites in bee colonies.

Set comes with 2 x 16 gram CO2 gas cylinders. That amount is enough for performing about 12 tests. Efforts should be made the first injections to do more sparingly, as the pressure in the cylinders is high at first. The CO2 gas cylinder has to be inserted inside the dispenser. An injection needle is screwed onto the dispenser’s nozzle. It is important to screw the CO2 properly inside the dispenser to prevent unnecessary leakage.

Testing. About 200 bees (approximately 25 g) are taken from the brood honeycomb and placed in the larger compartment of a plastic container. There should be as many bees as can fit in between the red marks on the jar. Try to avoid catching the Queen along! Replace the top cover to prevent the bees from escaping. Make sure both caps are on – the top and bottom one. Insert the CO2 dispenser needle through the small hole on the bee container. Allow gas inject for about 4-6 seconds. Then wait 10-20 seconds for the anesthesia to work. Shake the bees in the jar gently for about 10 seconds to allow the mites to fall down under the inner sieve onto the bottom lid. The mites are to be counted by removing the bottom cover. By the number of fallen mites can determine if a family needs treatment. Finally, the top lid has to be opened to allow the bees to get fresh air. The bees wake up slowly and are returned to the hive.

Treatment scheme.

No treatment is required at all, if: in month of July we get – less than 3 mites, month of August fall – less than 5 mites, month of September – less than 8 mites.

The family should be closely monitored, if we have 3-13 mites fall in July, 5-13 mites in August, and 8-13 mites in September.

Treatment is urgently required! If more than 15 mites fall in July, more than 15 mites fall in August, or more than 15 mites fall in September.

The equipment should be washed periodically with warm water and detergent. After each use, clean the bottom cover, on which the fallen mites are collected.

Country of origin: Denmark. We reccomend to watch a short video on the use here.
